All Blacks utility forward Scott Barrett has re-committed to New Zealand Rugby, the Crusaders and Taranaki after signing a contract through to 2025.
Barrett has been a stalwart for the Crusaders since making his debut for the Christchurch-based franchise in 2014 and is set to make his 100th appearance for the Super Rugby Pacific champions in Saturday’s clash with the Fijian Drua in Lautoka.
Happy in New Zealand
The 29-year-old is happy to continue his journey with the various teams he represents.
“I am excited to re-sign with New Zealand Rugby, the Crusaders and Taranaki for two more years,” said Barrett. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to represent these teams who I love playing for.”
Barrett, who can play at lock and on the blindside flank, made his All Blacks debut against Ireland in Chicago in 2016 and has already won 59 caps for the three-time world champions.
New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson expressed his delight at Barrett’s decision to extend his stay in New Zealand.
“Scott is well-respected by team-mates, management and fans across the game,” he said. “We’ve watched him grow into a leader at all levels and are delighted to continue working alongside him.”
All Blacks head coach Ian Foster echoed Robinson’s sentiments.
“This is fantastic news for the All Blacks,” he said. “Scott Barrett has become a massive contributor on and off the park, and to have his commitment past the Rugby World Cup is a real boost.”
Crusaders coach Scott Robertson highlighted the role Barrett has played in his team’s unprecedented success in Super Rugby, and said Barrett is an “incredible player with the skills of a coach” and that his understanding of the game is one of his strengths.
“For club and country Scott Barrett committing through until the end of 2025 is huge,” said Robertson. “His experience, the respect and mana he has in every team he plays for, makes him a massive asset.
“He’s an incredible player with the skills of a coach. He’s always thinking how things could be better, he’s always reflecting and challenging what we’re doing. He’s usually a step ahead and is a great thinker of the game of rugby.

“He’s got the ability to be one of the greats of our game. He’s a Crusader. He is a true Crusader.”
Taranaki chief executive Mike Sandle welcomed the news that Barrett has followed his brother Jordie, who also recommitted to the province last year.
“Taranaki Rugby are thrilled that Scott has recommitted to New Zealand Rugby and Taranaki Rugby,” he said.
“Taranaki has a proud tradition of producing All Blacks and I know all our players love coming home to play for Taranaki when the opportunity presents.
“The Barrett family is a name synonymous with Taranaki Rugby and I know his family would cherish the opportunity to see Scott, Jordie and Beauden run out onto Yarrow Stadium in a Taranaki Jersey.”
