Warrington head coach provides injury latest

Warrington head coach Daryl Powell has provided a fresh update on Daryl Clark following their 28-6 defeat to St Helens.

Clark, 30, started the game at loose forward, but was forced from the field inside the first half through injury.

It saw the international hooker watch on inside the Totally Wicked Stadium as Warrington fell to their second defeat of the season.

The former Castleford man had only returned from injury last week against Wigan, having sustained a knock to his knee on his return to the Mend-A-Hose Jungle earlier this month in Round Six.

He has been included in Shaun Wane’s extended 40-man England squad ahead of the mid-season international against France at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, but now looks likely to miss that fixture.

Powell provides latest on Daryl Clark

“It’s a reoccurrence of his knee. I don’t think it’s serious, but he couldn’t go back on, so it was serious enough,” said Powell.

“I don’t think he’ll be fit for that (the international fixture), I’m not 100% he’ll be fit for the week after against Wakefield. He just needs to get himself right and we’ll look after him these next couple of weeks and see where he’s at.

“Tonight I had a plan to give Danny Walker a bit of a breather, then Clarkey gets injured.

“Josh McGuire got a bit of a cut on his knee. The usual bumps and bruises. We aren’t playing next week, so it’s probably come at a good time for us.”

Reflecting on the defeat, Powell added:  “It’s the second week on the trot against the two best teams in the competition that we start poorly.

“I thought they were the better team pretty much all the way through the game. But like last week, so many key lessons for us.

“Both teams were missing players, so there were no excuses there. I think we’ve learnt an unbelievable amount of lessons over the last two weeks, and if we do learn from it, we become a better team.”
