Najmul Hossain Shanto hits century as Bangladesh beat Ireland in thrilling second ODI

Najmul Hossain Shanto hit a hundred as Bangladesh chased down a target of 320 to beat Ireland by three wickets in the second ODI played in Chelmsford. Harry Tector fired a career-best 140 that was struck off 113 balls to help Ireland amass 319 for six, hitting 10 sixes that set a new ODI record for his team. George Dockrell contributed an unbeaten 74 off 47 balls and apart from Hasan Mahmud’s early success in removing openers Stephen Doheny and Paul Stirling, it was a difficult afternoon for Bangladesh’s bowlers. Facing a daunting target given the conditions, the tourists took the match to the wire with Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 117 laying the foundation for their reply until he was removed by Curtis Campher. With four runs needed from the last four balls of the final over, wicketkeeeper Mushfiqur Rahim hit a boundary to propel Bangladesh to a 1-0 lead in the series. Tuesday’s opening instalment of the three-match series, which is being staged entirely in Chelmsford, was called off because of rain.
