WARRINGTON Wolves academy graduate Ellis Longstaff has quit rugby league.

The 21-year-old, who had moved to Championship side Featherstone Rovers on a permanent deal earlier this year, confirmed the news on his Instagram page and said he was now set to “pursue a new opportunity.”

Longstaff established himself as one of the country’s most promising young talents while with The Wire, for whom he made 15 senior appearances after debuting in 2020, while he was also capped by England Knights during that time.

However, he fell down the pecking order under Daryl Powell and finished the 2022 campaign impressively on loan at Hull FC, for whom he scored six tries in 10 matches.

He was allowed to join Salford Red Devils in a season-long deal for 2023 but made only seven appearances before joining Featherstone permanently mid-year.

“After many years of playing rugby league I’ve made the decision to leave the sport,” Longstaff wrote on social media.

“I would just like to take the time to thank everyone who has been a part of my rugby career, from playing as a kid, to living the dream as a professional, I am grateful for every opportunity the game has given me.

“A big thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way; coaches, backrooom staff, players and most importantly my family if it wasn’t for the sacrifices they had made since I was a young boy I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“It had always been my childhood dream to play professional rugby and I will cherish the memories and friends I have made forever.

“I am now going to pursue a new opportunity and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”
