Warrington RUFC under 14s team reaches Lancashire Cup Final

Just a week after the under 15s reached the Lancashire Cup final, the club’s under 14s did the same on Saturday thanks to a performance that has been described as “truly heroic” by their coach.

They will face either Orrell or Tyldesley in the final after beating Leigh 19-5, with all three of their tries coming in the first half.

Player of the match Ethan Gore crossed twice either side of a try from Will Lovell before the team’s defence took over, surviving a barrage of attacks from a bigger Leigh side.

“There were some truly heroic performances today from the boys, especially in defence,” the team’s head coach Dom Hastings said.

“Alsop, Ireland, Finn and Lydon tackled everything that came at them all game but on a day when our defence was needed so much, it took two players who can change a game in the blink of an eye to give us the edge.

“Will Lovell scored a worldie and our player of the game Ethan Gore made this with his two moments of brilliance.

“This was a really special win for the boys and we’re all so proud of this marvellous squad of players.

“At half time we spoke about the need to not let the intensity drop.

“We discussed words we’ve used all season like ‘resilience’, ‘playing for your mates’ and ‘not taking a backward step’ and these came to the fore in that second period.”

With the under 15s having reached their own final by beating Heaton Moor last weekend, there could well be two Lancashire Cup titles heading to Warrington in the weeks ahead.

Team: Cope, McGowan, Leponis, Finn, Peel, Alsop, Ireland, Lydon, Hough, Hastings, Waters, Lovell, Nicholson, Taylor, Gore. Subs: Higginson, Tickle, O’Neill, Harris, Daintith, Birchall
