Richie Myler has retired from rugby league ahead of his move to become Hull FC’s new Director of Rugby. As revealed by Hull Live on Saturday, Myler is set to take up a senior role within the club’s on-field department, with an announcement expected imminently.
That confirmation is now closer than ever, after his current club, York Knights, confirmed he has called time on his professional career. The 33-year-old has recently undergone elbow surgery and has been advised to hang up the boots after guidance from specialists.
A two-time Challenge Cup winner, Myler won the Lance Todd Trophy in 2020 after helping Leeds Rhinos to the trophy, while he also won the League Leaders’ Shield with Warrington Wolves in 2011.

In a statement, York said: “Following the completion of the surgery, it became clear that the road to recovery was going to be an extended one and, after taking time with his family, Myler spoke with York RLFC Chairman Clint Goodchild last week and shared his decision to retire.”
They added: “York RLFC would like to thank Richie for his time and efforts at the Club and we wish him nothing but the best in his post-playing career.”
Myler’s focus will now turn to turn Hull FC. His first task will be identifying and appointing a new head coach and then overseeing an important recruitment cycle as he looks to turn the club’s fortunes around.
