Taunton St Andrews are the winners of the 2024 Baker Cup after beating local rivals Taunton by 50 runs in the final that took place in front of a good sized crowd at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Monday evening.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat the Saints lost Cam Harding with 11 on the board which brought skipper Josh Thomas to the wicket to join his brother George.
Between them the brothers added 135 runs in just over 12 overs before Josh was bowled by Henry Weatherill for 67 which came off 36 balls and contained four fours and five sixes.
George Thomas went shortly afterwards for 66 off 52 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes, another victim for Weatherill.
Thomas Rew then blasted 23 off 10 balls before Weatherill struck again while Gabriel Gallman-Findlay remained unbeaten on 25 from 11 balls as Saints ended 203 for five from their 20 overs
Pick of the bowlers was Weatherill who ended with four wickets for 33.
When Taunton replied openers Charlie O’Dea and Will Abell took the total onto 32 when Abell was caught by George Thomas off Cam Harding for nine off the penultimate ball of the fourth over
Harding then claimed the wicket of new batter Hugh Kelly for seven and Lloyd Alley removed Oscar Coleman which made Taunton 56 for three in the ninth over.
O’Dea and Damon Lee saw up the 100 in the 13th over but one run later and after adding 45 together the opener was run out for 56 which came off 40 balls with six fours and two sixes.
Lee and ‘keeper Solly Woodhall then came together and put on 40 before Lee was caught by James Matravers off Alley for 32 runs off the last ball of the 18th over.
Jay Terry came on for the final over and with his first delivery claimed Woodhall for 33, caught and bowled and then had Jordan Hoffman stumped by Rew off the last ball of the innings as Taunton ended on 153 for eight.
Cam Harding ended with two for 25, Alley with two for 25 while Terry ended with two for two.
