Cody Gakpo is targeting glory on four fronts after the Reds’ blistering start to the season. Liverpool sits at the top of the Premier League after seven matches and has won both of its Champions League fixtures while also making it through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
Gakpo has had to settle for a bit-part role so far this season, featuring in each of the Reds’ 10 games but starting just three, but will hope to line up more frequently going forward given he has recorded four direct goal contributions in the three games that he has started in.
Liverpool was involved in a title race for much of last season before falling away in the closing weeks of the campaign, while the Reds also came within two results of winning a remarkable quadruple during the 2021-22 season. That incredible effort came before Gakpo joined the club in January 2023, and he is targeting an even better campaign this time around under Arne Slot.
“Hopefully we can win everything!” Gakpo told Sky Sports, adding: “It’s the start of the season, we are in all competitions and when you participate in a competition you participate to win. So that’s our goal and I think last season we showed that we could do it.
“We were very close to a lot of things but yeah, we missed it in the end a little bit. But that also gives us hope and strength for this season, that we know we could come that far, so this year we are going to push it even further.”
Despite not starting as often as he might like under Slot, Gakpo confirmed that he is enjoying working under the Dutchman. Gakpo added: “I like adapting to different things because that makes a person grow in every aspect of his life. So, yeah, I like that, to be fair.
“So then we have to grow, we are forced to grow, we are forced to learn new things and getting out of your own comfort zone. As I said, I think every person will grow at that point, so I think it’s good.
“Obviously we have a new manager in, so that’s a change. Some things changed inside the club as well, so that’s a change as well. The way we train, the way we play is a little bit different. So, we all have to adapt and I think it’s going to make us better as a team and as a club.”
