The Welsh Rugby Union’s cup competitions were devalued yesterday after 20 games did not go ahead over the weekend.
When cup ties do not go ahead on the day the team at fault are knockout out of the competition with the opposition progressing to the next round courtesy of a walkover. Unfortunately 17 clubs could not fulfil their cup fixtures, with many of them not able to muster the required number of players to field a team.
The problem extended all the way up to the WRU Championship Cup where Tondu were awarded a walkover victory over Dunvant who forfeited the fixture. There were three walkovers in the WRU Division 1 Cup with Newport HSOB, Swansea Uplands and Dinbych not able to fulfil their fixtures.

In the WRU Division 2 Cup Laugharne, Betws, Pyle, Nantgaredig and Loughor were the guilty parties, while Machynlleth and Amman United pulled out in the WRU Division 3 Cup. There were four in the WRU Division 4 Cup where Alltwen, Brackla, Cardiff Saracens and Crynant suffered walkovers while Hartridge, Cwmgwrach, Bangor, Bethesda Athletic and Sully Sports were unable to field teams in the WRU Division 5 Cup.
In some cases clubs like Cwmtwrch were able to arrange a friendly fixture after their cup opposition had pulled out of the fixture. Community clubs in Wales being unable to fulfil fixtures is nothing new but it will concern the WRU that such a high number of cup ties were not completed and it could be argued it devalues the tournament.
The WRU will hope this does not repeat itself in the third round of its cup competitions.
