Brendon McCullum has warned Jofra Archer that he is not guaranteed a spot on England’s Ashes team next winter.

Sussex star Archer, 29, was impressed in the Ashes series back in 2021 when he was a constant threat to the Australian batters.

This included his infamous spell against Steve Smith, which left the batter retiring hurt after taking a blow from a short ball to the back of his head.

However, persistent injury problems have hampered his international career.

Archer has been eased back into the England set-up in the white-ball game over 2024.

But McCullum has insisted that the fast bowler is not a shoo-in for the Test side.

“He is all-in for playing for England and getting back to red-ball cricket, but at the same time, there are significant opportunities for him.

“We have to be fluid. He has to continue to feel right in his own body, sustain a decent workload and put his hand up from there.

“There is no guarantee [he will be selected for Test cricket].

“We have unearthed some incredible talent in the last 12 months.

“The stocks are looking pretty good. If he gets fit and ready, and that is the skillset we are after, he puts himself in the frame.”

Archer was recently signed by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL auction but will miss the start of the County Championship season.

This absence will cost Archer red-ball action in the run-up to the Ashes down-under next November.
