ADDINGHAM, promoted last season as champions of Division One, have wasted no time in making their mark in the Aire-Wharfe League Premier Division.
They won the toss at Adel and racked up an imposing 345-3 in their 50 overs, with none of their batters failing.
Openers Jacob Parker (86 off 85 balls) and Ricky Palacio (36 off 40) put on 117 inside 18 overs, and there was no let-up after that as Nick Farrell weighed in with a quickfire 31 and brothers Will and Richard Atkins added 147 unbroken.
Will finished on 107 not out from 87 deliveries and skipper Richard 66 off 64, with Adel conceding 43 fours and seven sixes, each batter hitting at least one six.
Adel were then dismissed for 161, with Farrell taking 4-31 and James Nixon 3-31 as seven bowlers got the chance to turn their arm over ahead of Addingham’s double weekend – they are at home to Alne on Sunday in the Voneus National Village Cup.
Jonny wasn’t the only Bairstow among the runs at the weekend as his half-brother Andy scored 133 not out for Horsforth Hall Park at Tong Park Esholt.
The elder Bairstow, who turns 50 this summer, celebrated taking over his club’s captaincy by hitting 14 fours and eight sixes off just 95 balls as they made 280-8 after being sent in.
Bairstow dominated the scoring after arriving at the crease at 70-4, adding 79 for the fifth wicket with Rishi Limbechaya (49) and 63 unbroken with Charles Greratbatch (11no).
Esholt replied with 200-9, Henry Wainman bagging 6-48.
Defending champions Otley could have had an easier start than being at home to Burley, who finished third last season, but won by four wickets with six overs to spare.
Otley chose to field and had Burley at 63-4 before Joe Hall (68) and Charles Davy (28) put on 68 for the fifth wicket.
That was followed by a partnership of 51 between Hall, who hit seven fours and three sixes, and Red Bolton (24), and a wagging tail helped them to 222-8, Damon Reeve (5-46) and Steve Brown (3-56) picking up all of the wickets.
After tea, George Myers (51), who hit nine fours and two sixes off only 28 deliveries, dominated an opening stand of 61 with Alex Atkinson (9), which ended in just the eighth over.
Atkinson fell four runs later, but once Jake Ross came to the crease, Otley shut the door on their visitors.
He scored 71, hitting seven fours and two sixes, and added 53 with Brown (27) and 61 with Reeve (24), both Ross and Brown falling with the score on 210, Burley using eight bowlers in their bid to defend their decent total.
Pool also made a winning start, defeating visitors Beckwithshaw by 89 runs.
Beckwithshaw won the toss, and that seemed the right decision when Pool had lost half of their wickets with just 65 on the board, but Tom Watson (76) and Will Pallister (83 off 86 deliveries) then put on 110, and a wagging tail helped them to 245-9.
The visitors, who were 15-4 and 82-7, did well to get 156 in reply, with captain Charlie Bell (4-33) and Sam Lawrence (3-15 off 10 overs) the best of the seven bowlers used by Pool.
Rawdon, relegated to Division One last season, made an eye-catching start to life in Division One by winning a high-scoring encounter at home to Bolton Villas.
Sent in, they revived from 48-3 thanks to a fourth-wicket partnership between former skipper Joe Smith (111) and Andrew Duckworth (114no).
Smith hit 17 fours and a six from just 99 deliveries, while Duckworth was even quicker, cracking eight fours and six sixes from 85.
Facing a total of 346-7, Villas had the consolation of making 306, canny spinner Andrew Doidge taking 5-82 and triggering a collapse from 221-3.
Menston, champions of Division Two, also made a good start to life in the second tier, defeating visitors Guiseley by 93 runs.
The hosts’ innings wasn’t really going anywhere at 112-7 after they were asked to bat, but Charlie O’Hara (75) found a willing ally in George Cameron (17) and they put on 57 for the eighth wicket, with O’Hara hitting eight fours and three sixes.
Aniket Rana (3-27) and Louie Kenyon (4-51) were the most successful bowlers in a total of 188, but Guiseley’s reply never got off the ground, only No 8 Ben Grimmett (31) emerging with credit as they were castled for 95, Fraser Oates taking 6-32.
Ilkley, who are usually there or thereabouts at the end of the season, won a tight contest by nine runs at New Rover.
Sent in, they made 258 on a strip lovingly prepared by former Headingley groundsman Keith Boyce, but they had to recover from 75-5.
Nick Schofield (112), captain James Pearson (39) and Rob Spivey (28) were chiefly responsible for that, with Schofield’s innings lasting only 89 balls and including 15 fours and five sixes.
Pearson helped him add 119, defying Akbar Ahmed (7-74).
New Rover were 99-1 in reply and had partnerships of 94 and 81 but just fell short at 249-7, Spivey completing a good match by taking 3-43.
Olicanian were also involved in a close contest, making 232-6 after opting to bat at home to Bardsey.
Opener Harry Smallwood (65) featured in partnerships of 55 for the first wicket with skipper Tom Starkey (34) and 93 for the second with Haroon Mahmood (46), Theo McLelland (32no) and Sam Pilling (21no) making runs down the order.
Five of the six Ollies bowlers then took wickets as Bardsey won by four wickets with four balls remaining.
In Division Two, Leeds Modernians are third in the fledgling table after winning by seven wickets at Horsforth, who were dismissed for 80 after being sent in, with Siddhant Gola (3-28) and Greg McManus (4-6) doing most of the damage.
Jordan Symonds (22no) and Gola (38no) then saw Mods home inside 20 overs with an unbroken stand of 58.
