Brendon McCullum has vowed to use England’s “immense” talent to revive the struggling men’s white-ball sides, after being appointed as the new head coach.
The New Zealander has transformed the fortunes of the Test team since taking charge in 2022, and has now been backed to take over the T20 and 50-over sides, following Matthew Mott’s sacking this summer.
This time last year, England’s men were world champions in both white-ball formats, but have surrendered those crowns in a pair of underwhelming defences.
This month’s T20 and ODI series against Australia are being seen as the start of a fresh cycle, with experienced heads such as Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali already dropped from both sides.
Marcus Trescothick, who is one of McCullum’s assistants in the Test set-up, will be in interim charge for those fixtures and through to the end of the year, before the New Zealand legend takes the helm in January, having signed a contract extension until after the next 50-over World Cup in 2027.
“This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace, and I’m eager to work closely with [captain] Jos Buttler and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place,” McCullum said.
“The talent within English cricket is immense, and I’m looking forward to helping these players reach their full potential. My goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive and where we can continue to compete at the highest level across all formats.”
