Fans’ joy as Wigan Warriors win Challenge Cup and complete Rugby League clean sweep

Wigan Warriors fans are celebrating after their team wrapped up a record-extending 21st Challenge Cup title with an 18-8 win over Warrington at Wembley. The victory meant the Cherry and Whites also became the first team since 2007 to hold all four of the game’s major honours at once.

Despite a late rally Warrington were second best throughout and seldom looked likely to deliver the cup to head coach Sam Burgess in his first season in charge. Tributes to Leeds great Rob Burrow were held in the build-up to the final with the 64,845 crowd at Wembley – the biggest since 2017 – rising for an impeccably-observed minute’s silence prior to kick-off, and again seven minutes into the match in honour of the shirt he wore with such aplomb.

Paul Redhead wrote: “Wigan hold all 4 trophies , what a job [head coach Matt Peet] has done.” Joe Broome posted: “Get in there Wigan! Now let’s push on to the super league.”

And Jake said: “Absolute dominance from Wigan. League Leaders Shield, Grand Final, World Club Challenge and now the Challenge Cup all the space of 9 months. What a team.”

Wigan Athletic posted: “Congratulations to all at Wigan Warriors,” while near neighbours Leigh Leopards wrote: “Congratulations @WiganWarriorsRL on returning the @TheChallengeCup to our borough for the third year in a row Guess it’s our turn next year then? No pressure…”
