Glasgow Warriors stalwart George Horne has inked a new deal at the United Rugby Championship side in a boost ahead of their Challenge Cup quarter-final.
Horne, 27, made his professional debut for the team back in November 2016 and is a fan favourite at Scotstoun, as his busy attributes make him great to watch.
Only DTH van der Merwe, Tommy Seymour and Niko Matawalu have scored more tries for Glasgow than Horne. The scrum-half has a tally of 39 in 94 fixtures.
Scored a try over the weekend in big win
His latest crossing came in Saturday’s record-breaking 73-33 triumph over the Dragons while Horne also leads the club’s points scored chart this season on 81.
The livewire number nine has also won 20 caps for Scotland in his career thus far, making his debut against the USA in Houston back on the 2018 summer tour.
“I’m really happy to re-sign,” Horne told the club’s website.
“We’ve got such a great group of boys, the coaching team is getting the best out of everyone, and there’s just a really good feeling around the club right now.
“I’ve been loving my rugby this year. A lot of what you see on the pitch just comes from hard work, really – Franco’s got us working hard, the boys are buying into it and he’s giving us the freedom to express ourselves and play.
“We’ve progressed so much this season, even from the start of the season up until now. We just want to get better and better every week, and if we do that then there’s no reason we can’t go on and challenge right at the very top.”
Head coach Franco Smith added: “We’re very pleased to be able to secure George as a Glasgow Warrior for the next couple of seasons.
“His rugby intelligence is clear for all to see and he is a highly competitive athlete on the pitch.
“Moreover, he is someone for whom representing this club means a great deal and we know that he will give everything for the jersey. We look forward to continuing to work with him as this squad continues on its journey together.”
Major League Rugby move for Luke Green
Elsewhere, London Irish Academy graduate Luke Green has joined Major League Rugby’s San Diego Legion on loan with immediate effect, the Premiership club has confirmed.
The prop links up with former Exile Blair Cowan in the playing squad and will be coached by another former Exile in Alex Corbisiero, San Diego’s scrum coach.
So far in their season, San Diego have picked up four wins and one loss from an opening five fixtures in the MLR.
Green will return to Hazelwood before the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
“We know Luke will be in good hands with Blair and Alex already over in San Diego and look forward to seeing the developments he makes from his time in America,” said London Irish boss Declan Kidney.
“Like Ed Scragg with Sydney University, Luke will experience valuable game time and it will only benefit him and London Irish in the future.”
“It’s a great opportunity for me to measure myself in a new environment,” said Green.
“Not many people get to test themselves abroad so early in their careers, so I’m excited to pick up some new experiences that will help me to develop as a player for when I return to London Irish.”
