Huddersfield coach Ian Watson has revealed that prop Nathan Mason will make an imminent loan move to a fellow Super League club.
The 29-year-old forward has yet to play for Watson’s first team this season, but has featured for their reserves.
Mason would be the third Huddersfield player to be loaned out in as many weeks, with Sam Hewitt and Innes Senior finding game time with Wakefield.
When asked by Love Rugby League about Mason’s pending loan move, Watson said: “There’s one club in Super League that want to take him which is where we want him to play.
“There were a couple of Championship clubs that put their hand up at the top end but we didn’t want him to go to the Championship.
“We want him to go to Super League so that when he does have to come back and play for us, he’s ready.
“The good thing for us is that we’ve got quite a few middles available or potentially close to coming back, so we can afford to lose one.”
Nathan Mason to be the latest Huddersfield player sent out on loan
Utility forward Sam Hewitt has made two appearances for Wakefield since joining Mark Applegarth’s side on a short-term loan.
Senior followed in the footsteps of Hewitt in making the loan to Trinity last week. The Ireland international played in their 38-0 defeat at St Helens on Friday.
Could prop Mason join the pair at Belle Vue? Watson didn’t confirm which club Mason is heading to, but Wakefield coach Mark Applegarth has made no secret of his desire to bring in more bodies to cover their lengthy injury list.
Watson confirmed to Love Rugby League that Hewitt’s loan with Wakefield will now be rolling on a week-to-week basis.
He said: “At the moment while we can keep him playing and we don’t need him, we’ll keep him playing at Wakefield for as long as we can. It’s part of his development.
“Sam is with us for a few years and so is Innes Senior, but it’s about making them better players. If they are sat here just training against us, then it’s not actually improving them that much in terms of their game experience and things like that.
“Sam Hewitt has done a few weeks at Wakefield so if we do need somebody we can pull him back.
“Sam’s been with us for the last two or three years anyway so he knows our system but it’s important to get Nathan Mason a bit of a run out because let’s say if something happens to Seb (Ikahihifo) or Jack Ashworth, then we’ll need him to come in and replace. It’s going to be a squad that makes you do well.”
Mason needs just one appearance to reach 150 for his career.
