The International Cricket Council are expected to discipline match referee Chris Broad after he tweeted a picture mocking David Warner’s record against his son Stuart.
On Friday, after Broad dismissed Warner for the 17th time in Test cricket, Chris Broad tweeted a meme that poked fun at the Australian’s record. The picture that Chris posted, originally posted by the Barmy Army, England’s main supporters group, displayed The Simpsons character Bart Simpson, with Warner’s head, writing lines on a chalkboard saying, “Stuart Broad has got me out again”.
Chris is currently a match referee for the ICC. It is understood that the ICC are disappointed in his actions, and it is not the sort of behaviour that they from an ICC official. The matter is now being dealt with internally.
Broad has been a match referee since 2003 and is well-respected within the game. While Broad has never officiated in the Ashes, he has frequently officiated in games involving Australia.
Before becoming a match referee, Chris Broad played 26 Test matches for England. He had a fine record against Australia, hitting four centuries in eight Tests at an average of 58. Broad scored three centuries in the 1986/87 series Down Under, when England triumphed 2-1.
His son Stuart has enjoyed a remarkable hold over Warner since the start of the 2019 Ashes. In this time Broad has removed Warner 12 times at a cost of 8.5 apiece, thriving through bowling around the wicket against the left-hander.
Broad is closing in on the record for most dismissals against any one batsman. Only two bowlers have dismissed an individual batsman more often in Test cricket: Alec Bedser removed Arthur Morris 18 times in Ashes cricket, while Glenn McGrath removed Michael Atherton om 19 occasions.
At Headingley, Broad dismissed Warner for four in the first innings and one in the second, with the Australian caught by Zak Crawley in the slips on both occasions.
