Stefan Ratchford says he is ‘privileged’ to be named Warrington’s new captain ahead of the 2023 Super League campaign.

The 34-year-old enters his 12th season with the club, having joined from Salford back in 2012.

To date, Ratchford has made 299 appearances for the Wire, scoring 86 tries. He will switch to the centres in 2023, receiving shirt number four.

The outside-back is also sixth on the list of the club’s all-time leading goal-kickers with 496.

Stefan Ratchford on new captaincy role

“I’m extremely proud and honoured to be named captain of this club,” Ratchford said.

“It’s a huge privilege to be given the opportunity and is a role I’m determined to succeed in.

“We’ve got a strong leadership group here also which I know I’ll have the full support of. To follow in the footsteps of some of the club greats who’ve captained Warrington over the years is a special honour for me.

“All the lads have bought into the values we’ve spoken about in pre-season and there’s a really positive feel around the place. I can’t wait now for the new season to get started and the challenge that lies ahead.”

Ratchford led the side for the majority of the 2022 season following a long-term injury to Jack Hughes, who joined Leigh during the off-season.

The England international also signed an extended contract with the club last June that will keep him at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of the 2024 season.

He has made a total of 320 Super League appearances to date.
