WOOLSTON Rovers open their 2025 National Conference League Division One campaign with a trip to face Wigan St Patricks on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
Rovers NCL head coach Liam Lawton accepts it is a tough start for his team while also pointing out there will be no easy fixtures in the division as he cites the team’s aims in 2025.
“St Pats finished just above us in the league table last year, with us both just missing out on the play-off places and our aim this year is to get ourselves into the top six and then see where we go from there,” said Lawton.
“We have had three good run outs over the past few weeks to give us chances to get some combinations working; all three have been very closely fought with one draw followed by a two-point win and then a last second two-point defeat last weekend.
“These competitive games have been perfect for us and hopefully we can get off to a winning start.”
Meanwhile Crosfields, Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington Rugby League Cup winners against Woolston at the weekend, start their league campaign at home against Ince Rose Bridge.
Soap were convincingly beaten at Ince in the Division One Play-Offs last September, so a stern test is expected at Hood Lane on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
Woolston Rovers A begin their new campaign, also in Wigan, when they travel to Hindley Stags Reserves in the NWML Entry Division on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
Rovers A player/coach Craig Woolvine said: “It has been a long pre-season for us and even though we have not had any warm-up games plenty of the squad have been involved in the NCL side so we are not going into the game completely cold.
“It will be interesting to see what kind of game this is; Hindley Reserves have only come into the league this season so we are going into a bit of the unknown.
“We have a mixture of youth and experience in our side and hopefully they will blend well together and we can have a successful year.”
