Matt Kvesic: Exeter and England back-row forward to rejoin Worcester Warriors

Worcester Warriors have re-signed England back-row forward Matt Kvesic from Exeter Chiefs.

Kvesic, 28, has agreed a long-term contract to return to Sixways from 1 July, ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Academy product Kvesic made 63 appearances in his first spell with the Premiership club between 2009 and 2013.

After four years at Gloucester he moved in 2017 to Exeter, where he scored 13 tries in 58 appearances and played in last season’s Premiership final.

Only Chris Pennell, Matt Cox and Graham Kitchener remain from his early days at Sixways – but he will be joined back with Warriors next season by Matt Sherratt, who is returning to the club from Ospreys, having been part of the Worcester Academy staff when Kvesic was coming through.

‘It’s nice to be heading home’

“Matt was the one who first brought me through the Academy,” Kvesic told BBC Hereford & Worcester “It’s a nice feeling to be heading home, although with a little less hair.

“I’ve had a great time at Exeter, who have shown what a top team they are over the last few seasons. But we don’t want to be just copying what they’ve done. We’ll be looking to find our own feet with all the young players coming through.

“Hopefully I’ve gained from my time away, I can make an impact and help the team push up the table. I like to think I’m a young 28 who can make a difference.”

Kvesic admits that he was Worcester-bound from the moment he first spoke to Warriors director of rugby Alan Solomons.

“I wasn’t in a position to be renewed, he said. “But I’d spoken to Solly a while back. It was a case of hoping that someone was going to come in.

“We’re in strange times right now and you have to look at the bigger picture, but I’m so grateful to come back to the place where it all started.

Worcester have not disclosed the exact length of Kvesic’s deal.

Kvesic has won four England caps since making his England debut on tour against Argentina in June 2013, the most recent of them in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match against Italy last September.
