A late interception try from Scotland squad centre Huw Jones sealed Glasgow Warriors’ 19-10 win over Cardiff Blues in a close-fought game.
Peter Horne’s three penalties and five points from Brandon Thomson provided the other visitors’ points.
Kristian Dacey crossed for Cardiff Blues with Jarrod Evans kicking a conversion and penalty.
It was only Glasgow’s second victory in seven Pro14 matches as coach Danny Wilson downed his old side.
On a rare dry night for Cardiff Blues at their temporary Newport home, Glasgow wing Lee Jones made his first appearance for 22 months following injury and was named man of the match.
Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent only but could not finish their chances as Glasgow shaded a tryless first half 6-3.
Evans chipped over an early penalty while Horne rattled the post with his first shot at goal but levelled the scores from in front of the posts after 12 minutes, following a scything break by Glenn Bryce.
Wing Owen Lane provided the main home threat with a break from halfway which saw Tomos Williams just fail to gather a potential try-scoring inside pass, while Williams’ kick-through on 31 minutes saw Lane collect and finish superbly- only to be recalled for an earlier knock-on.
But Horne’s second penalty after 34 minutes proved the only other score of the half as Glasgow edged the territory statistics without breaking through.
Warriors came close straight after the break but failed to make the most of a close-range overlap, before that man Lane almost got clear with another kick and chase.
The home side swept the ball across field and Aled Summerhill’s inside ball was snapped up by supporting skipper Dacey to grab the opening try after 44 minutes, Evans converting.
A Horne penalty made it 10-9 with Gwilym Bradley yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on, and Horne’s replacement Thomson took a simple penalty chance to restore Glasgow’s lead on 62 minutes.
The decisive blow came 10 minutes from time as Cardiff Blues tried to attack from deep, with replacement centre Jones intercepting a Mason Grady pass to canter in and Thomson’s conversion putting the visitors two scores ahead.
Cardiff Blues captain Kristian Dacey told BBC Sport Wales:
“We spoke at half-time about trying to tighten up in the contact area but in the second half they’ve had some key turnovers.
“We’ve made over 200 tackles again this week so we’ve got to turn those tackles into attack, we need that ball in our hands more than recently and we’ve got to improve our attack.
“If you look at our losses, we’ve put in some decent performances defensively, but it feels like in the last couple of weeks we haven’t learned from our errors.
“We’ve got two weeks before we play Newcastle in Europe so we’ve got to learn lessons from this game and get better.”
Glasgow Warriors coach Danny Wilson said:
“If I’m honest then we should have come away with more points. But we are chuffed with the win, the effort from the players and the dominance.
“We went in at half-time wondering how we were not more up with all the pressure and opportunities, but that has been the story of our season a bit.
“The contact area was a plus, but we needed a win after tough games with the big Irish sides and we got what we needed.
“Huw Jones is the kind of player for those key moments, a game breaker. He had a good read of the situation and that try took the pressure off and allowed us to control the final few minutes.”
