Record number of teams join Stroud’s junior table tennis league


A RECORD number of teams entered the Stroud Junior Table Tennis League.

The league saw 22 teams take part, including new entries from the recently formed Malmesbury Table Tennis Club, Bristol Table Tennis Academy and Kings School in Gloucester.

The league was divided into four divisions, with Marling School emerging as clear winners of Division 1.

Represented by Niall Walker and Benji Day-Lewis, Marling School dominated the top division.

Benji Day-Lewis was unbeaten throughout the tournament and picked up the highest average trophy for the second consecutive year.

Wycliffe College finished as runners-up, with Nailsworth Phoenix Table Tennis Club A and Bristol Table Tennis Academy A sharing third place.

Stroud Table Tennis Club A and B secured the last two spots in the division.

Jan Keller was the standout player for Stroud Table Tennis Club, defeating Phoenix’s top-ranked Fred Zanker.

In Division 2, Kings School clinched the top spot with 18 points, narrowly beating Nailsworth Phoenix B, Wickwar Foxes, and Chantry A, who were all separated by just two points going into the final session.

James Eyre was the standout player for Kings School, with strong support from Jacob Grayling and Lando Story.

Division 3 saw Malmesbury A as comfortable winners, scoring 18 out of 20 points.

Andrew Marriage and Archie Clarke were unbeaten in doubles and lost just one singles set each.

Stroud Table Tennis Club C finished as runners-up, ahead of Chantry B.

Division 4 was dominated by Bristol Table Tennis Academy B, who won all their matches, amassing 20 points out of 20.

Lawrie Colls and Rupert Castleman were unbeaten, proving they were in a league of their own.

Cam Hopton A managed to hold on to second place despite a 5-0 defeat to the leaders.

Stroud Table Tennis Club D, Cam Hopton B, and Malmesbury B finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

The organisers expressed their gratitude to the umpires, helpers, competitors, and parents for making the tournament a success.
