12:07 PM

OVER 26: ENG 104/5 (Malan 44 Moeen 1) chasing 210

That was the wicket Bangladesh were looking for with Jacks and Malan slowly but surely rebuilding for the tourists. Moeen in the new man in and he is off the mark first ball with a single.

12:06 PM

WICKET!!

Jacks c Afif  b Mehidy 26

Mehidy has been parsimonious so far and he continues in that vein putting the pressure back on England. Jacks finally loses his cool falling right into the trap, holing out to Afif at deep mid-wicket.

FOW – 103/5

12:01 PM

OVER 25: ENG 102/4 (Malan 43 Jacks 26) chasing 210

Malan feathers one off Mustafizur but it falls just short of the wicketkeeper. Five dot balls are followed by a clip off Malan’s pads for the only run of the over.

11:58 AM

OVER 24: ENG 101/4 (Malan 42 Jacks 26) chasing 210

Taijul continues with his left-arm spin, two singles and a two come off the over before Jacks edges for a boundary. This pair are slowly but surely putting England back on top, they don’t need to go after the ball, just staying in and waiting the odd bad ball will do. Runs have become easier to come by these past few overs.

11:52 AM

OVER 23: ENG 94/4 (Malan 39 Jacks 21) chasing 210

The pressure is released somewhat as Jacks hits over mid-off for six. That is then added to with a four the next ball, this one a clip off his legs.

Twelve from the over – just what the doctor ordered to wrestle the momentum off the hosts.

11:48 AM

How Buttler was sent back to the pavilion

11:48 AM

OVER 22: ENG 81/4 (Malan 38 Jacks 10) chasing 210

Taijul to Malan – the ball turns into the England batsman, wraps him on his front pad and the left-arm spinner appeals with gusto. They think about a review but decide against it, and it’s a good decision as the replay/Hawkeye shows it would have missed leg stump. Two balls later, following a Malan single, Taijul beats the outside edge of Jacks. England really are under pressure and this pair needs to hold it together.

11:43 AM

OVER 21: ENG 78/4 (Malan 36 Jacks 9) chasing 210

Mustafizur is on and immediately gets good carry through to the keeper. The left-armer is bowling over the wicket to the left hander Malan. A single gets Jacks on strike and it’s nearly a fifth wicket as the England man hits it firmly back at the bowler who can only palm away the ball. Tough chance but a chance nonetheless…Just s single off that over.

11:39 AM

OVER 20: ENG 77/4 (Malan 35 Jacks 9) chasing 210

Better from England with seven coming from that Shakib over.

11:36 AM

Bye bye Buttler

Big wicket as the skipper departs for nine.

Buttler out – Reuters

11:34 AM

OVER 19: ENG 70/4 (Malan 35 Jacks 4) chasing 210

England look frustrated out there at the moment. Jacks plays a nothing shot to one that keeps low, runs aren’t flowing but reckless shots aren’t the order of the day. Taskin bowls three dot balls before Jacks tries to drive through the covers but only succeeds in getting an inside edge that could so easily have clattered into the stumps. One from the over and the pressure is building from both ends.

11:29 AM

OVER 18: ENG 69/4 (Malan 35 Jacks 3) chasing 210

Throughout both innings today wickets have fallen at regular intervals, no batsman, bar possibly Shanto, has got in and looked really in control. Shakib returns and bowls a good tight line to Jacks until he bowls a pie last ball that is only carved for a single.

11:26 AM

OVER 17: ENG 66/4 (Malan 33 Jacks 1) chasing 210

Jacks is the new man in and is off the mark with an inside edge. Taskin, who really has bowled well, then beats Malan’s outside edge with one slanted across the left-hander.

Nervy times these for England whose hopes, you suspect, rest with Malan staying in until the end.

11:21 AM

WICKET!!

Buttler c Shanto  b Taskin 9

Huge wicket for the hosts – Tamim brings on his strike bowler, puts in a wide first slip (probs a second slip) and the England captain tries to push one off the back foot, but only succeeds in edging to said slip. Great captaincy from Tamim.

FOW 65/4

11:17 AM

OVER 16: ENG 65/3 (Malan 33 Buttler 9) chasing 210

Buttler makes it look very easy as he gets down low to sweep the impressive Mehidy for four. Seven from the over.

11:15 AM

OVER 15: ENG 58/3 (Malan 32 Buttler 3) chasing 210

Malan hits his second six of the day – this one slog-swept over mid-wicket – before Taijul appeals with gusto for an lbw. It’s given not out and Tamim reviews. It’s umpires call on whether it would have hit leg stump and the left-hander survives. At the moment this is all about survival, this pair knowing England need a partnership.

11:09 AM

OVER 14: ENG 50/3 (Malan 25 Buttler 2) chasing 210

Mehidy bowls an absolute peach that squares Malan up, beating the bat and just missing off peg in the process. Not much you can do with a brilliant delivery such as that. These are testing times for the tourists. Three singles from the over bring up the 50 for England.

11:06 AM

OVER 13: ENG 47/3 (Malan 23 Buttler 1) chasing 210

That was reckless from Vince, it’s how he plays but this situation – chasing a low total – demands partnerships not sixes…Buttler is in and his team are under pressure. He’ll know that He’s off the mark second ball.

11:03 AM

WICKET!!

Vince st Mushfiqur  b Taijul 6

The England batsman dances down the track is beaten all ends up, wafts at thin air and is miles out of his crease as a delighted Mushfiqur stumps him.

FOW – 45/3

11:01 AM

OVER 12: ENG 45/2 (Malan 22 Vince 6) chasing 210

Maiden from Mehidy who’s bowling well, getting turn and bounce as Malan is rightfully watchful.

Good stuff from the hosts so far, but defending a low total they need wickets.

10:59 AM

OVER 11: ENG 45/2 (Malan 22 Vince 6) chasing 210

Taijul gets one to keep low – a proper pea roller – that Vince does well to keep out. What follows is the shot of the day so far: a classy drive over extra cover. Who doesn’t love the high elbow of Vince? Some of you may not, but there you go…

10:55 AM

OVER 10: ENG 38/2 (Malan 20 Vince 1) chasing 210

Mehidy bowls five dot balls but is unable to join the dots as Malan pushes for one through the off side the last ball. Powerplay is done and the visitors are 38 for two. Bangladesh will be happy with how it’s going knowing they have the spinners to strangle the run rate in the middle overs.

10:52 AM

Here’s that Malan maximum

10:52 AM

OVER 9: ENG 37/2 (Malan 19 Vince 1) chasing 210

James Vince in the new man in and he’s off the mark with a clip round the corner for one. A couple more wickets here for the hosts and England will be in big trouble on a pitch that’s isn’t giving up runs easily.

10:48 AM

WICKET!!!

Salt b Taijul 12

The left-armer darts one in and it cleans up the right-hander, leg stump not exactly cartwheeling, rather released from the ground.

FOW 35/2

10:47 AM

OVER 8: ENG 35/1 (Malan 18 Salt 12) chasing 210

Taskin is replaced by the off spinner Mehidy and Malan welcomes him to the attack with a cut for four. Next ball Malan drives uppishly for two – his heart would have been in his mouth for a split second before the ball fell just short of extra cover. Mehidy’s getting a but of turn and bounce – manna from heaven for spinners, encouraging for the overs to come.

10:42 AM

OVER 7: ENG 29/1 (Malan 12 Salt 12) chasing 210

‘Release the pressure’ Malan may well have thought to himself as he dances down the track to hit Taijul over his head for a maximum. A single follows before Salt runs the ball for three to third man. Eleven from the over.

10:38 AM

OVER 6: ENG 18/1 (Malan 4 Salt 9) chasing 210

Taskin is bowling well, he’s getting the ball to rear up off a length and Malan is having to be watchful. A dab down to third man for one gets Salt on strike and the right-hander drives well but only manages to find extra cover. The second four of the chase comes the next ball as Salt plays a short-armed jab that races to the boundary between mid-on and mid-wicket – England needed that.

10:33 AM

OVER 5: ENG 13/1 (Malan 3 Salt 5) chasing 210

Shakib continues with his left-arm spin, Malan comes down the pitch and hits unconvincingly to deep mid-wicket, the ball falling short of the fielder. Tow balls later the lefty then scampers a single before Salt pushes for two through the covers. This pair need to rotate the strike with boundaries hard to come by.

10:29 AM

Look away now Jason Roy…

10:29 AM

OVER 4: ENG 7/1 (Malan 1 Salt 2) chasing 210

Good start from the hosts with the ball – there’s a lot of energy out in the field and Shakib and Taskin have found their lengths well. This over Taskin beats Malan’s outside edge before he flirts with the inside edge, Tamim then flirts with the idea of a review but thinks better of it. It proves to be the right decision, the replay showing the ball didn’t find a slither of willow. A maiden over from the pace bowler.

10:24 AM

OVER 3: ENG 7/1 (Malan 1 Salt 2) chasing 210

A Salt single gets Malan on strike and he gets off the mark with a very risky single to square leg, he only just makes it to the non-striker’s end. Salt then swipes ungainly at a Shakib ball on fifth stump, the opener. Nervy opening from the tourists.

10:20 AM

OVER 2: ENG 5/1 (Malan 0 Salt 1) chasing 210

Taskin takes the new ball at the other end and gets one to kick up off a length to Salt. Four dot balls and a thick-edged single follow as the aggressive right-hander Salt is watchful.

10:16 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

It’s funny. Jason Roy’s hundred in Bloemfontein was just three matches ago, but it is already starting to feel quite a while. Three cheap dismissals since then, and this one wasn’t smart.

10:16 AM

OVER 1: ENG 4/1 (Malan 0 Salt 0)

That was an eventful first over – a mixture of false shots and a cut late cut, before that scoop (a bit of a nothing shot) saw the departure of the under-pressure opener.

10:15 AM

WICKET!!!

ROY c Tamim b Shakib 4

Dramatic first ball as Roy slaps a full one straight back at Shakib and it looks as though the left-armer drops it. But the replay shows that it fell short of the spinner…Roy then cuts one for four before scooping one straight in the air straight to Tamim at mid-off.

FOW 4/1

10:15 AM

The players are out there

And England’s chase is under way.

10:10 AM

Moving briefly from white ball to red…

Following the remarkable one-run defeat by New Zealand yesterday – you recovered yet? – the attention turns to the Ashes. There’s plenty of action to take place before the first Test at Edgbaston, not least this ODI series, but who would you have as your starting XI come June 16?

That’s a question we asked of our stable of cricket writers and here’s what they had to say…

READ: England’s Ashes XI: Our writers pick their team to take on Australia in the opening Test this summer

09:47 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

England improved as that innings wore on, and bowling Bangladesh – who, don’t forget, haven’t lost an ODI series at home since England were last here in 2016 – out for 209 is a very good result. 210 should be a straightforward enough target for a team that bats down to No 8, but let’s see: Bangladesh will be hawkish in the field.

The wickets were shared around, with no standout performance. It is easy to see how an attack with this shape – three seamers, three spinners – could be very effective at the World Cup.

09:43 AM

Bangladesh set England 210 for victory

That was good stuff from England, all the bowlers bowled to a plan and wickets fell at regular intervals.

The average score batting first in Mirpur is 217, so it’s not a bad score from the hosts. There was a fair bit of turn out there and this won’t be a straightforward run chase for Buttler and Co.

09:41 AM

WICKET!!!

Taijul c&b Moeen 10

Moeen is back and induces Taijul into a hoick right up in the air that he takes with ease.

BANGLADESH ALL OUT FOR 209

09:39 AM

OVER 47: BAN 209/9 (Taijul 10 Mustafizur 0)

Archer ends with a no-ball and with figures of two for 37 – his first spell was a bit off but after that the fast bowler came back well and looked to be bowling well within himself.

09:37 AM

WICKET!!

Taskin c Buttler b Archer 14

Archer bowls that back-of-a-length ball that has proved fruitful for England today, it takes the inside edge and Buttler takes it well, low to his right.

FOW – 208/9

09:32 AM

OVER 46: BAN 206/8 (Taijul 9 Taskin 14)

Five overs to go – can Bangladesh use up all remaining 30 balls? Wood is back and the 200 comes up for the hosts – a psychological mark that they will deem defendable if they make early inroads into the England batting line-up. Wood then overpitches one and Taijul lets it come on to the bat pushing for four through midwicket. Nine from the over.

09:26 AM

Archer’s first wicket of the day

09:26 AM

OVER 45: BAN 197/8 (Taijul 3 Taskin 14)

Archer sprays the first ball well down leg before finding his line and going for just two singles the rest of the over

09:22 AM

OVER 44: BAN 194/8 (Taijul 1 Taskin 13)

Rashid to the lefthanded Taksin, it’s a leg break that beats the bat and hits the batsman on the backfoot – it’s given out but Taksin immediately reviews – the review shows it would have bounced over the stumps and Taksin survives. As if freed by that reprieve the Bangladesh man then slog sweeps Rashif for a maximum to cow corner. That’s followed up with a cute dab for four down to the vacant third man region.

If they can get to 200-plus Bangladesh might fancy their chances – the wicket is spinning and this game would be far from over, although England would be strong favourites still.

09:16 AM

OVER 43: BAN 183/8 (Taijul 1 Taskin 3)

A wicket and a single from that Archer over and England will be looking to wrap this innings off fairly quickly.

09:15 AM

WICKET!!!

Mehidy c Buttler b Archer 7

It’s all too easy for the tourists at the moment. Archer returns to the attack, bowls one back of a length outside off stump and Mehidy can only succeed in giving Buttler catching practice as he tries to carve one down to third man.

FOW 182/8

09:13 AM

Here’s Will Jacks’ first ODI wicket for England

09:12 AM

OVER 42: BAN 182/7 (Mehidy 7 Taskin 3)

Four singles and a wide from this Rashid over and it’s been 29 balls since Bangladesh’s last boundary. That suits England just fine – Bangladesh are struggling to up the run rate and wickets are coming at regular intervals.

09:09 AM

OVER 41: BAN 177/7 (Mehidy 5 Taskin 1)

England haven’t gone after wickets, they’ve just stuck to their gameplan and the hosts’ batsmen have helped them out with some less than textbook shots. Two from that Wood over.

09:05 AM

OVER 40: BAN 175/7 (Mehidy 4 Taskin 0)

Bangladesh are in real danger of being bowled out here – they’ve never got on top of this England attack and that nothing shot from Afif sums up their innings so far.

09:04 AM

WICKET!!

Afif c Rashid b Jacks 10

Bangladesh need to go after a bowler, will they target Jacks? No is the immediate answer as Afif spanks a floated ball straight to Rashid at mid on.

FOW 175/7

09:00 AM

Strangled down the leg side

09:00 AM

OVER 39: BAN 171/6 (Mehidy 2 Afif 8)

Woakes comes back into the attack and carries on the parsimonious tone of the England attack so far. One comes from his first three deliveries, and one comes from the last three as the England man cramps the batsmen for room as he bowls that back of the length ball that has worked well for the seamers.

08:57 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

There is a nice balance to England’s attack, and it feels like a first glimpse of what we might see at the World Cup. Perhaps there Liam Livingstone, with his ability to turn the ball both ways, might take the place occupied by Will Jacks in this XI, and Sam Curran will never be far away. But in Asia, three spin options is gold dust.

08:56 AM

OVER 38: BAN 169/6 (Mehidy 1 Afif 7)

A four and three singles come off  this Rashid over and the hosts need some fireworks – can’t see it happening though.

08:54 AM

OVER 37: BAN 162/6 (Mehidy 0 Afif 1)

The 250 mark looks a long, long way off for the hosts at the moment. England are well on top, with two new batsmen at the crease.

08:52 AM

WICKET!!

Mahmudullah c Buttler b Wood 31

Bangladesh have never got on top of this England attack and this Wood over illustrates why. He’s bowling at pace back of a length and the hosts’ batsmen are only able to deal in singles. The last ball of the over sees Mahmudullah caught down the leg side by Buttler. It’s given not out but it goes upstairs – the replay reveals that it did hit the bat on its way to the wicketkeeper…

FOW – 162/6

08:43 AM

OVER 36: BAN 159/5 (Mahmudullah 30 Afif 0)

That wicket has come at a great time for England – they are well on top and have removed the in-form batsman.

08:42 AM

WICKET!!

Shanto c Roy b Rashid 58

Mahmudullah is aware the run rate needs seeing to and he stretches from outside the off stump to sweep Rashid for a welcome four. Last ball of the over Shanto tries to get in on the act, swiping a short one, but it’s straight to Roy as shortish midwicket.

FOW – 159/5

08:39 AM

OVER 35: BAN 152/4 (Mahmudullah 24 Shanto 57)

Bangladesh are struggling to get on top of the England bowlers – the odd boundary won’t do at the moment as Wood bowls a good line and length at pace – just three runs from the over.

This partnership is worth 46 from 77 – good they’re still in but they need to up the run rate…

08:34 AM

OVER 34: BAN 149/4 (Mahmudullah 22 Shanto 56)

Rashid has bowled well, bowling very few ‘hit me’ balls. Shanto, however, frees the shackles, reverse sweeping for a much-needed boundary. The hosts need to up the ante if they are to post a defendable score.

08:31 AM

OVER 33: BAN 142/4 (Mahmudullah 20 Shanto 51)

Wood returns to the attack and is on the money straight away with three dot balls. He then errs in line, clipped for a single off his pads by Shanto, it’s actually a leg bye…but the England man then bowls too short and too wide allowing Mahmudullah to free his arms and punch off the back foot for four – it’s the hosts’ first boundary for 44 deliveries.

08:23 AM

OVER 32: BAN 136/4 (Mahmudullah 15 Shanto 51)

Rashid bowls a peach to Shanto that beats the batsman all ends up before bowling a pie down leg that’s rightly called a wide. He comes back well as he again beats the bat with a googly. That then is also followed by a wide – a right hotch potch of an over from the leggie there…Time for the second drinks break.

08:19 AM

OVER 31: BAN 133/4 (Mahmudullah 15 Shanto 50)

Archer gets one to fly over Shanto’s head, the left0hander is beaten for pace, but it’s too high and is given a wide. Two balls later the left-hander turns one round the corner and that’s his 50, a vital score for the hosts. He’s been in good touch in T20 and brought that form into today’s match.

08:15 AM

OVER 30: BAN 129/4 (Mahmudullah 15 Shanto 47)

Rashid has a decent (ish) shout for lbw with his trusty googly, it’s given not out and Buttler decides not to review, a wise decision with the ball hitting Mahmudullah outside the line. Two runs from the over before the right-hander is then beaten all ends up by a perfect leg break. England are well on top thanks to good, disciplined bowling.

08:11 AM

OVER 29: BAN 127/4: Mahmudullah 14 Shanto 46)

England are doing well, Bangladesh need to up the ante here but there are no easy runs out there at the moment as Archer goes for just a single off his first three deliveries. He’s bowling better than in his first spell, having found his line and length. He nearly has a wicket as Shanto is beaten for pace and nearly loops one off the shoulder of the bat to gully, the ball falling just short.

08:07 AM

OVER 28: BAN 126/4 (Mahmudullah 13 Shanto 46)

Jacks continues with his off-spin, going for three singles off the over – England are keeping the hosts quiet here, they are mostly dealing in singles and that suits the tourists just fine.

08:04 AM

OVER 27: BAN 123/4 (Mahmudullah 12 Shanto 45)

Back Archer comes into the attack – his opening spell was nothing much to write home about, can he find his rhythm here? He’s bowling back of a length in the high 80s, Three from the over.

07:59 AM

OVER 26: BAN 120/4 (Mahmudullah 10 Shanto 44)

Jacks beats Shanto with one that turns and bounces – joy! Three from the over.

07:57 AM

OVER 25: BAN 117/4 (Mahmudullah 8 Shanto 43)

he boundaries have dried up for the hosts but as I type that Mahmudullah comes down the pitch and drives Moeen down the ground for four. There then follows an inside edge that so nearly hits the stumps.

07:55 AM

Mooooeeeenn!

How the all-rounder beat Shakib.

07:53 AM

OVER 24: BAN 109/4 (Mahmudullah 2 Shanto 41)

A couple of quick wickets here and England will be well on top – this looks a good track to bat on and you cannot give your wickets away in the fashion Mushfiqur and Shakib have done. Bangladesh are under pressure and Jacks bowls well this over, just two from it.

07:50 AM

OVER 23: BAN 107/4 (Mahmudullah 1 Shanto 39)

That was another indifferent shot from Shakib, who, like Mushfiqur, has given his wicket away.

07:49 AM

WICKET!!!

Shakib b Moeen 8

Moeen comes round the wicket to Shakib who plays an elegant drive for two. But Rashid then fires one in and Shakib misses it trying to hoick to mid wicket.

FOW – 106/4

07:46 AM

OVER 22 BAN 103/3 (Shakib 6 Shanto 39)

Will Jacks enters the attack and his first ball in an ODI international is cut for four by Shakib who’s a good player of spin. The Surrey man comes back well, going for only an airy single from the next four deliveries before another single ends the set of six balls.

07:43 AM

Rashid’s wicket

07:43 AM

OVER 21: BAN 97/3 (Shakib 1 Shanto 38)

Just two from that Moeen over as Shakib gets of the mark with a cuff off his pads for one.

07:39 AM

OVER 20: BAN 95/3 (Shakib 0 Shanto 36)

England need wickets in these middle overs and Rashid has done the job so far.

07:38 AM

WICKET!!!

Mushfiqur c Wood b Rashid 17

The right-hander hasn’t been at his fluent best and he tries to free himself of the shackles, sweeping Rashid. But he only succeeds in top edging to Wood in the deep

FOW – 95/3

07:35 AM

OVER 19: BAN 94/2 (Mushfiqur 17 Shanto 36)

Good Moeen over – just a single off it.

07:35 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

England are not quite on it in the field. Salt should have taken Mushfiqur in the deep off Moeen, but put a foot in touch. And now the ball has just touched the ground before Roy took Shanto off Rashid. Not a great deal more he could have done about that one, to be fair.

07:34 AM

OVER 18: BAN 93/2 (Mushfiqur 17 Shanto 35)

It’s time for leg spin as Rashid comes on – two singles start the over before he gets his dependable googly to strut its stuff, Mushfiqur playing it well, squirting it for one to square leg. Then the leggie bowls a pie – a full toss that Shanto slaps straight to mid-wicket. Is this one out? Nope, it’s not, the replay showing that the ball just hit the ground before Roy took it. The soft signal was out but the video boffins overrule the onfield decision.

07:27 AM

OVER 17: BAN 89/2 (Mushfiqur 15 Shanto 33)

Musfiqur lays into Moeen, slog sweeping him to cow corner, is it caught on the boundary by Salt? No one seems sure as the England man catches it then steps over the rope before throwing it to himself on the other side. The question is to do with where his feet were after the initial take…it goes upstairs and it’s not out, Salt’s foot was over the rope when he chucked the ball back into the field of play. So it’s a six rather than a wicket – feast or famine.

07:21 AM

OVER 16: BAN 81/2 (Mushfiqur 8 Shanto 32)

Shanto looks in good nick as he pulls Wood for four in front of square, he was sitting on he back foot waiting for that one.  Six from the over.

07:14 AM

OVER 15: BAN 75/2 (Mushfiqur 7 Shanto 27)

Moeen drops one too short and Shanto plays it well, backing away and cutting in front of square for a classy four. Seven from the over and it’s time for drinks.

07:12 AM

Woods’ wicket

07:11 AM

OVER 14: BAN 68/2 (Mushfiqur 5 Shanto 22)

The overs starts with Shanto cutting Wood for two. The England man then digs one in short, too short for the umpire’s liking as it’s given as a wide. The next ball is also short and Shanto plays it well, pulling for two in front of square. Perhaps time for Wood to pitch one right up there having pinned the Bangladesh batsmen back in their crease? Nope, the last ball of the over is a back of the length ball that Shanto gets on top of well.

07:06 AM

OVER 13 BAN 63/2 (Mushfiqur 5 Shanto 18)

Twelve overs in and it’s time for spin, Moeen into the attack. Five singles from the offies opener.

07:01 AM

OVER 12: BAN 58/2 (Mushfiqur 3 Shanto 15)

Wood has started well, he’s bowling wide at the crease and creates the angle to the right handers. With his pace and that line he’s constantly asking questions of the batsmen. Three singles from the over.

Tamim - AP

Tamim – AP

06:56 AM

OVER 11: BAN 55/2 (Mushfiqur 2 Shanto 13)

Good over from Woakes with just a single off it.

06:53 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

A slightly scrappy start for England overall, with half-chances going down, misfields, bowlers’ radars slightly off. But Wood bowls Tamim with a beauty! Bangladesh have not appeared to enjoy the extra pace of Archer or Wood. I wonder if we might see a bit of spin at the other end, mind, with two off-spinnners in England’s lineup and a leftie at the crease.

06:52 AM

OVER 10: BAN 54/2 (Mushfiqur 2 Shanto 12)

Wood beat the Bangladesh captain for pace as the ball came off his elbow onto the stumps. The next man in is Mushfiqur and he’s given a gift as Wood oversteps and the right-hander hoicks Wood for two with the free hit. Decent first over from Wood there as the end of the powerplay ends with the hosts on 54 for two.

WICKET!!!

Tamim b Wood 23

Mark Wood comes on for Archer and his first ball is in the high 80s. He needs no time to find his radar as he then gets one to nip back to Tamim and the Bangladesh opener plays on – great ball and great start fort the England pace ace.

FOW – 51/2

06:45 AM

OVER 9: BAN 51/1 (Tamim 23 Shanto 12)

Shanto cuts Woakes for four, the England opener just erring on length to illustrate that he has to get it up there or face the consequences. The England bowler then overpitches and the left-hander pushes him down the ground for another boundary. There’s very little room for error on what looks like a fine pitch to bat on, the ball is coming on nicely to the bat.

06:41 AM

OVER 8: BAN 42/1 (Tamim 22 Shanto 4)

Archer still struggling for rhythm as Shanto gets off the mark with a guide through the vacant gully region for four. There’s a short leg that comes into play with a nasty delivery that Shanto plays well, getting on top of the ball. Last ball of the over sees Roy drop one at point – ‘drop’ seems a bit harsh as the England fielder gets a hand to it diving to his right…drop or decent stop, tomato, tomaaato etc…

06:35 AM

OVER 7: BAN 38/1 (Tamim 22 Shanto 0)

Tamim is the hosts’ dangerman and it’s clear to see wide as he cuts Woakes for four off a ball that was neither too wide nor too short. The England opener then beats the bat with a back-of-the-length ball that carries through nicely to Buttler. Just four off that good Woakes over.

06:31 AM

OVER 6: BAN 34/1 (Tamim 18 Shanto 0)

Much better from Archer as he only goes for a single before he gets one to rear up off a length to Shanto that the Bangladesh batsman plays well with soft hands.

06:28 AM

OVER 5: BAN 33/1 (Tamim 17 Shanto 0)

Shanto is the new batsman and he survives the last ball of the over. Better from Woakes that over and they have the breakthrough.

06:26 AM

WICKET!!!

Liton lbw b Woakes 7

Woakes beats Liton’s bat with a peach that holds its line before the Bangladesh opener then pulls a short one for a maximum the next ball. Woakes cannot bowl that short on this wicket.

But the England man has the last laugh as he pitches the next one fuller, it straightened and hits the right-hander on the back pad – a great delivery.

FOW – 33/1

06:20 AM

OVER 4: BAN 27/0 (Tamim 17 Litton 1)

Archer is struggling with his rhythm as he oversteps and the free hit that follows sees Tamim flat bat him, baseball style, for four down the ground. Archer has a wry smile that soon disappears as Buttler then fumbles one that goes through his mitts for a shocking bye – that was the dictionary definition of schoolboy stuff.

06:16 AM

OVER 3: BAN 20/0 (Tamim 13 Litton 0)

Good from Woakes as he starts with three dot balls but then he bowls one too straight and there are four leg byes. A wide follows and it’s clear that the two England bowlers need to find their radars.

06:13 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

Not much of a crowd in yet, but that’s not much of a surprise. The game, strangely, starts at noon local time, which is neither here nor there in terms of being a day-nighter. Anyway, England will be fielding in intense heat. It’s about 32 degrees, so the people who are watching are generally huddled in the shade. They’ve just greeted the Bangladesh team with a huge cheer, mind.

06:12 AM

OVER 2: BAN 15/0 (Tamim 13 Litton 0)

Joffra Archer has the new ball from the other end and starts with a wide. The next one is a full toss on leg stump and Tamim says ‘thank you’ clipping it to the mid-wicket boundary for an easy four. Not the best start from the big man here. Roy then stops another boundary after a push through the covers before another clip for four on the legside follows, as Archer comes round the wicket. That’s 12 off the over as Archer struggles to find his line and length.

06:05 AM

OVER 1: BAN 3/0 (Tamim 3 Litton 0)

Woakes bowls a back-of-the-length ball just outside off to the lefty Tamim and it beats the bat first up before the hosts’ skipper pushes down the ground for two. Three dot balls follow before Tamim clips one off his hips for a single. An non-descript start in Mirpur.

Will MacPherson on what to look out for…

A full strength attack

Perhaps only Olly Stone (who is with the Test team in New Zealand) is missing from England’s very best bowling attack here. They have two quicks, Archer and Wood, two new ball specialists, Woakes and Mahmood, and two versatile left-armers, Topley and Curran. It is unlikely that all six can make the World Cup squad, so Mahmood especially will be looking for a statement showing.

Young spin-bowling all-rounders

Moeen Ali remains an enigma, while Liam Livingstone has struggled with injury and has not exactly nailed his ODI place when fit. Which makes a debut for Will Jacks especially, but also Rehan Ahmed an intriguing prospect. Jacks is a powerful hitter who bowls handy off-spin and could stake a claim anywhere in the top six. Ahmed starts the series unwell, but could be Adil Rashid’s long-term successor in the all-important wrist-spin role.

Trouble at the top

Openers Jason Roy and Dawid Malan both scored excellent hundreds on the tour of South Africa, but need more runs here to nail a World Cup place. With Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Harry Brook and perhaps Ben Duckett or Ben Stokes returning, there may just be one spot in the 15-man squad for Roy or Malan. And that is before we get to Jacks, Phil Salt and James Vince…

05:48 AM

Will MacPherson in Mirpur…

Greetings from the Sher-e Bangla Stadium in Mirpur where, remarkably, England are back in action just over 24 hours after that extraordinary Test in New Zealand concluded. It’s all a bit ridiculous, but England have a strong team, and a serious challenge ahead of them in this series. Bangladesh have won their last seven ODI series at home, and are tricky customers, especially in this format.

For England, this represents excellent practice for the World Cup in India later this year, but they are missing some big name batsmen. Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and probably Harry Brook will be in at that team, and who knows about Ben Stokes?! So the batting has a slightly second-string look to it. Will Jacks makes his debut in the middle order, while there are recalls for Phil Salt and James Vince too.

The bowling is exciting, with Jofra Archer and Mark Wood in the same ODI team for the first time since September 2020. Archer and Chris Woakes will share the new ball, with the left-armers Curran and Topley left out. There’s no return for Saqib Mahmood just yet, either.

05:38 AM

Jos Buttler speaks to Sky Sports…

On what he would have done had he won the toss…

“A bit unsure, possibly would have have a bat.”

On the team…

“Wood and Archer in the team and Will Jacks will make his debut.”

On the side’s form…

“We haven’t haven’t had the series wins we would like but the bigger picture is the World Cup…It’s about adapting and being smart.”

05:34 AM

Bangladesh win the toss…

…and will bat

05:31 AM

Series follows series…

No sooner has that remarkable series in New Zealand finished than another in Bangladesh starts. ‘No sooner’ being just over 24 hours…But such is the hamster wheel of international cricket that this state of affairs should shock no one. Originally scheduled for before last year’s T20 World Cup, this series was pushed back to now for a variety of reasons, one being, from what I can make out, player/bubble fatigue, errrrmmm…

Anyway, Jos Buttler and Co are back on the subcontinent for three ODIs – the first of which is today – and three T20s. It will offer vital preparation for this year’s World Cup set to take place in next-door India where England will of course defend their title memorably won ‘by the barest of margins’ (as was yesterday’s Test) in 2019.

Not only that, however, and again linking it back to the one-run loss in Wellington, it could also prove key for this year’s Ashes. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are both in the squad (today’s team news coming up at the toss) and the sight of both of them continuing their return to full fitness in Bangladesh would provide a fillip for Ben Stokes and Co who became only the fourth side – and first non-Australian outfit – to lose having enforced the follow-on. During New Zealand’s second innings, that set up the remarkable win, England could have done with a 90mph pace ace to provide testing variety to the attack. It’s more than likely that at some point against the Australians this summer that will again be the case.

But that’s just a sub plot for this series, the main narrative being this year’s World Cup with the battle of places in the white-ball team as tough as ever. Buttler will be without Harry Brook and the other multi-format players who played in New Zealand but there are still huge selection headaches around both the batting line up (for this series Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Buttler, James Vince, Moeen Ali, Will Jacks and Phil Salt are seven that won’t go into six) and attack (Archer, Wood, Saqib Mahmood, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and Reece Topley offer a fine stable of seam options with Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed providing the spin choices).

That squad list only shows the strength in depth at England’s disposal and it’s one they may well need in Mirpur and Chittagong – Bangladesh are tough to beat on their home turf and this series should offer up good excitement for the present, as well as many a pointer to the near future.

Stay here for all the action with play set to start at 6am.
