Swindon St George Masters will be hosting the world’s first-ever rugby league Masters Nine festival in the town this weekend.

On Saturday, July 27, the club will be hosting a competition for teams with players aged 35 and over at their Greenbridge Road home, with free entrance for those interested in coming along, with a barbecue and fully licenced bar on hand to tempt spectators.

The competition will see this unique form of rugby league, matches see players, all of whom are aged 35 and over, wearing different coloured shorts depending on which age category they correspond to, and this dictates how aggressively they can be tackled, with younger players able to be taken down with full force but older players need only be tagged.

Swindon were selected to host this ground-breaking festival despite being fairly new to playing masters rugby league and club secretary Rod Evans said of his pride at being selected to host this competition: “We are very proud of being selected for this, great recognition after just three years of running a Masters side.”

Teams from as far afield as Brixton, Aldershot and Southampton will be among the entrants and the first game of the Festival will kick off at 1.30 pm.
