Harlequins head coach Tabai Matson believes that his in-form star Cadan Murley has what it takes to be an international winger for England.
Matson praised Murley’s ability on both sides of the ball ahead of Harlequins’ Premiership clash with Sale Sharks and hopes he is in with a chance of making his England debut soon.
Consistently high standard
Murley is currently second on the overall scoring charts in the Premiership after dotting down nine times in 10 matches for the Famous Quarters and scored more tries in 2022 than any other player.
He leads the league in running metres (771) and clean breaks (19) and is third overall for defenders beaten (33). However, Matson says there is far more to his game than his attacking prowess.
“Cadan’s standard is just so consistently high on both sides of the ball,” Matson told Standard Sport.
“Every week, he goes out and delivers, and he’s still young. He’s excellent, and you hope that his consistency gives him the platform to go to another level.
“If you can’t defend in this league, you won’t be here long. Cadan is one of our best attackers, but he’s also one of our best defenders, and he’s great under the high ball, so he’s the complete package.”
Murley’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed, as he was included in Eddie Jones’ squads in the latter stages of 2022 and was among the 45 players who joined a check-in England camp this week.
Maston hopeful for Murley
Steve Borthwick will name his maiden squad later this month, and Matson hopes that Murley is in the mix.
“You hope that Cadan’s in the mix there somewhere. Going to the camp this week means he’s in the eyesight,” Matson said.
The Quins boss added that he is interested to see how Borthwick selects his squad, as he can only make a few changes to the wider Elite Player Squad agreed upon by the RFU and Premiership clubs.
“I’m really intrigued on how Steve will select the Six Nations group,” Matson said.
“He can’t change the wider Elite Player Squad that much under the regulations. He’ll have people that he’s worked with that he trusts and that he has a history with, of course.”
“He doesn’t know Cadan. Cadan hasn’t been in his group, on his watch. I hope Cadan goes to those camps and shows himself as the good man and good professional that he is. We’re hopeful.”
