Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has been hospitalised for emergency treatment after suffering a heart attack during a match.
The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan SC in their latest T20 fixture in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League against Shinepukur at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan on Monday when he complained of chest pains.
Tamim was taken to hospital, where he underwent an emergency procedure to fix a blockage in one of the arteries in his heart.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said he was now under “close observation” on a coronary care unit.
“Tamim Iqbal Khan suffered a cardiac arrest this morning at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP),” read a statement from the BCB.
“Tamim received immediate emergency medical treatment after being transferred to the nearby KPJ Specialized Hospital, where he underwent a successful angiogram procedure to address a blockage in one of the arteries of his heart. He is currently under close observation at the hospital’s coronary care unit.”
BCB president Faruque Ahmed said: “We are very thankful to all the medics and specialists for their swift actions in this critical situation. The outpouring of concern for Tamim reflects how much he is loved and appreciated by the nation.
“The BCB is closely monitoring his health and continues to remain in contact with the hospital’s medical team. The board is committed to providing every support and assistance to ensure Tamim’s swift recovery.”
Opening batter Tamim represented Bangladesh between 2007-23, playing in 70 Tests, 243 ODI matches and 78 T20 internationals. He scored in excess of 15,000 runs and is the only Bangladesh player ever to hit centuries across all three formats of the game, among numerous other records.
He captained the ODI team between 2020-23, announcing his international retirement in a tearful press conference in the summer of 2023 before reversing the decision a day later following talks with the then-Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.
Tamim – who had opted out of the central contracts list for 2024 – later reaffirmed his retirement from internationals in January in the run-up to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, having revealed that he had been asked by players and selectors to consider returning.
He has continued to play domestic cricket, having previously had stints in the English county game with both Essex and Nottinghamshire.
