The one common complaint about England’s Rugby World Cup jersey : PlanetRugby

England are the latest team to reveal their Rugby World Cup jerseys and following their release, there is a universal complaint.

The men’s and women’s kits, designed by Umbro, were both released on Tuesday.

The kits feature what Umbro describe as ‘contoured anatomical knit panelling and a structure that moves with the body, giving players a feeling of power and confidence in their performance.’

The white home shirt is designed to ‘emphasise muscular biomechanics, while the rich navy alternate shirt provides a regal aesthetic.’

With England’s primary home colours being white and red, Umbro have kept the design for the men’s Rugby World Cup jersey quite simple.

The decision to keep it simple has polarised fans, but one point where many agree is the price.

According to Umbro’s website, the fans’ replica jersey will set you back at least £80, £65 for the kids, while the pro jersey will cost a whopping £120.

The price

“Not a bad kit but the prices are mental. Looking at £80 at least if you want to get the RWC / 2023 kit – I remember when these were about £50!” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Saracens Rugby added: “Plain, dull, and very overpriced. Can’t see Umbro winning many more rugby deals with basic T-shirts like this.”

England Rugby’s tweet revealing the new jersey was filled with replies linked to the price of the jersey, and one read as follows: “Do we really need yet another new shirt costing upwards of £70? What happened to the days of keeping a shirt for 2/3 seasons? Appreciate you don’t have to buy it but still no need to keep changing every year imo.”

The price was really a sticking point for fans with Sam Gill stating that the design resembles something you would pick up in the bargain bin.

“Without the Umbro logo, I’d expect to see this in the middle aisle of Aldi for £9.99,” Gill tweeted.

One review read: “Not amazing, but equally certainly not bad. The home shirt could be doing with a bit more red trim. It’s a bit plain. Alternative shirt solid, but will hardly be worn.”

The other replies were a lot more harsh.

“Not showing much ‘love’ at those prices!”

“Those prices are theft.”

“Zero imagination and ridiculous prices, it’s a no from me.”

“Another one that looks like a football shirt. Collars, people, collars. £80+ for a white t-shirt is a bit much, mind. Still, better than the last one with all the red crosses on. If that’s what they were.”

A Gloucester fan saw the bright side and “Found an easy way to save £125!”

Better than Ireland and New Zealand

Another joked that the jersey looked like a training shirt and that the official kit was yet to be unveiled.

“Those are some nice training T-Shirts but when are are they going to release the rugby jerseys?”

The All Blacks and Ireland jerseys were used as comparisons for the England kit, and according to many, Umbro bettered Adidas and Canterbury with their basic design.

@JamesDAustin wrote: “It’s not great, and as so often with Umbro kit somehow manages to look like a training top, but it’s also not that bad. Far better than, say, Ireland or the All Blacks kit.”

“Amazing compared to all blacks monstrosity,” another noted.

YouTuber Riaan Louw admitted that it wasn’t a bad jersey, but as a patriotic South African, he didn’t like it.

“I can’t fault it. But my loathing of the English makes me dislike it. It’s irrational, I know.”

Another added: “Like it. Simple. Collar horrible. But at least it has stayed clean”

One fan hopes that Steve Borthwick’s charges perform better than the Umbro designers are failing to be inspired by the jersey.

“Not a fan of this shirt, have always looked forward to getting the rugby World Cup shirt rather than a different one every couple of seasons and this just doesn’t inspire me. I hope the team perform better than the Umbro “designers”.”
