The green tinge to the batting strip made the bowlers’ eyes light up as the Deane arrived at Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday.

The Deane were asked to bat and runs flowed but not for long and  when Harry Smith was out for 42, taken low down by the evergreen Rob Turner behind the stumps at start of the 11th over, the score was 50 for two. The Deane innings was over in the 35th over with a total of 121.

Weston’s skipper, Lauchie Bailey, was the only bowler to complete his ten overs taking four wickets. The remaining six wickets were shared between Eden Wardle, Chris Davidson and Harvey Richards.

For those who have played club cricket locally, the way the match developed will not come as a great surprise. Harry Smith threw the new ball to Jason Squire and asked him to get to work. Jason had been watching carefully as the Deane wickets tumbled. He selected the area where he wanted to pitch the ball and the metronome started ticking.

Ten overs, three maidens, seven runs, five wickets. The ninth wicket fell with the score at 48. A third win of the season for the Deane was within reach but Charlie Cunningham and Eden Wardle had other ideas. They both faced Squire’s final over and survived. 21 overs and 62 runs later, with Weston just a dozen runs short of an amazing fight back victory, a ball from Sam Burgess kept low, passed under Cunningham’s bat and struck his pad just above his boot lace. The umpire’s raised finger confirmed the Deane win.

If the dominant emotion of last week’s win was ecstasy, then this generated relief.

The Deane remain bottom of the league but two wins on the bounce have put them in touch with fellow strugglers Ilminster and Wellington.

Jason Squire was perfectly happy to receive the man of the match award back at the clubhouse and Aussie joy was unconfined when Dave Jessep picked up the award for his contribution to an excellent win for the Deane Seconds against Bridgwater..

The Deane return to Convent Field next Saturday to host Golden Hill and with three league games to go, there is still a faint chance of avoiding relegation. The Deane Seconds travel to Castle Cary with a win keeping them in contention for second place in the Somerset Premier League.
