Flanker Tom Curry has been banned following his sending-off against Argentina in England’s opening Rugby World Cup Pool D match.
Curry has been handed a three-game suspension for his tackle on Los Pumas full-back Juan Cruz Mallia in the opening stages of England’s 27-10 victory.
Verdict
The referee on the night, Matthieu Raynal, sent Curry to the sin bin just three minutes into the game and asked for the incident to be checked by the Foul Play Review Bunker.
The Bunker then upgraded his yellow card to a red, and the disciplinary panel agreed with the officials.
World Rugby confirmed Curry’s three-game suspension on Tuesday, which can be reduced to two on completion of World Rugby’s Coaching Intervention Programme.
“The player accepted that foul play occurred and that the offence warranted a red card,” the statement read.
“The Committee noted that the offence carries a mandatory minimum mid-range sanction (six matches), and having considered the mitigating factors, including admission of foul play and correctness of the red card at the first opportunity, an exemplary disciplinary record, an apology to the player and good character, reduced the sanction by the maximum mitigation of 50 per cent.”
England suspensions
Curry, who made his first appearance after sustaining an injury in the Premiership final in May, will now miss England’s matches against Japan and Chile.
He will be free for England’s final pool game against Samoa on October 7 if he successfully completes tackle school.
The flanker is the fourth England player to be sent off in a Test match in 2023.
Freddie Steward was sent off against Ireland during the Six Nations with Owen Farrell and Billy Vunipola red-carded during the warm-up matches, which meant they missed England’s World Cup opener.
Vunipola is available for selection in the next match against Japan, while captain Farrell will only return for the clash with Samoa.
