WARRINGTON Wolves’ third new signing announcement of the week sees them bring a rugby union convert to the club.

Outside-back Alfie Johnson, who has represented England and Great Britain in Rugby Sevens, makes the switch to rugby league to join The Wire on a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old is believed to have been spotted over the summer in a brief spell playing for Leeds Rhinos’ reserve side, during which he scored four tries in a game against Castleford Tigers.

Despite not having played the game in the top flight, Johnson feels his attributes will suit the 13-man code perfectly.

“Warrington is a massive club with a massive fanbase and I’m really excited for the opportunity,” he said.

“As soon as Sam (Burgess) and Gary Chambers got in touch, I was set on making the move.

I’ve always had the ambition to play professional rugby at the top level. I want to get my head down now and work hard to be the best version of myself and repay the faith the club has shown in me.

“I feel rugby league really suits my style of play and attributes where I can be effective both sides of the ball. I can’t wait to get started.”

It is believed that, because Johnson has never played rugby league professionally, Warrington can add him to their squad without him counting on their salary cap for 2025 under the new talent pool dispensation.

In 2026, only 50 per cent of his salary would count on the cap.

On the field, Burgess believes they have signed a player of real potential.

“It’s great to welcome Alfie to the club,” he said.

“His main attributes and style suit perfectly to rugby league and he’s got a big pre-season in front of him now to build on his potential.”
