Wigan boss Matt Peet says his side lacked execution with the ball after the Warriors fell to a 14-10 defeat to Hull FC at the MKM Stadium.
It’s the side’s third defeat of the season, and their first since the wet home clash with Catalans back in March.
Opposition half-back Jake Clifford played a big part in his side’s victory, assisting Darnell McIntosh’s opening try before crossing for a four-pointer himself for an early 12-0 lead.
An extra two off the boot from a penalty saw the score at 14-0, before Iain Thornley crossed in the latter stages of the first half in his first appearance since last June for 14-6 at the break.
The Wigan outside-back, featuring on the wing, made it a brace in the second half on his first appearance in 11 months, but Hull managed to withstand the following constant pressure from the Warriors to hold on for a 14-10 victory.
It’s particularly impressive with Hull holding the worst defensive record in 2023 so far, while Wigan boast the second best attack behind Warrington.
It’s Tony Smith’s side fourth win of the season and records back-to-back triumphs, having defeated Huddersfield at home ahead of the international break.
The Black & Whites now sit on joint points with Ian Watson’s Giants on the Super League table with eight.
Matt Peet reflects on defeat
“The first half, I thought we weren’t where we needed to be, particularly defensively,” Peet said on Sky Sports.
“Fine margins between being good and being poor and a few times we just didn’t get our first contact right, and Hull were very good, and we allowed them to roll down the field and they punished us.
“Some of our defence lacked a bit of energy.
“In the second half, I thought that energy was there but ultimately we lacked execution with the ball. But credit to Hull, they were very desperate in their defensive efforts and we weren’t good enough to get the win.
“A few individuals weren’t there with energy and intent in the first half. But second half as I say, that was there.
“I was quite proud of the effort in the second half, but execution was lacking.”
The remaining Super League Round 11 fixtures take place in Friday night, with the Sky Sports cameras continuing their coverage from France as Catalans host St Helens.
