Head coach Tony Smith says Hull will be a big club again in the future, but does not know how long exactly it might take to get there.
The comments follow his side’s seventh straight defeat of the season, falling to a 34-10 scoreline against Rohan Smith’s Leeds at Headingley Stadium.
Smith’s Black & Whites sit 11th on the table, with only Wakefield below and still without a win in 2023.
Hull, boasting the likes of Brad Dwyer, Jake Clifford and Tex Hoy – although the latter two currently sidelined – have the third worst attack in the season.
Although more concerning is the ease of tries they concede at times, with the worst defence in the competition so far with 298 points against them.
The Super League winning coach thinks his side may have to suffer before they start to see success, with Friday’s defeat marking their seventh straight loss, having only won their two opening matches against Castleford and Leeds respectively.
Tony Smith: It’s a big job at a big club
He said: “Maybe we have to go through this struggle to get it going in the right direction.
“I know we will get there.
“I’d like to see those steps in the next few weeks but sometimes it’s got to be the hard way and in the way you don’t like and at the moment we don’t like the way it’s going but are determined to get it right.
“It does not matter how big I thought it was but it’s a big job at a big club.
“How long will it take? I’m not sure how long it will take but we will be a big club again. We would have liked it to have been on its way already but maybe this is what we have to do.”
Hull’s last trophy came in the form of the 2017 Challenge Cup, making it back-to-back triumphs, defeating Warrington 12-10 the year prior at Wembley.
