Worcestershire fell to a heavy defeat as Yorkshire completed a dominant all-round display at Headingley.
The Rothesay County Championship Division One match came to a conclusion on Sunday (April 13), as Yorkshire strolled to a 504-run victory after declaring their second innings at 315 for four at Headingley.
The home side’s victory was built on a disciplined batting performance, spearheaded by Dom Bess, who scored a brilliant 107 runs.
Bess, who resumed as nightwatchman on 10, quickly accelerated his innings, reaching his maiden County Championship century off just 115 balls.
His innings included two significant partnerships: 77 runs with James Wharton for the second wicket and 100 runs with Dawid Malan for the third.
Malan finished unbeaten on 76, while Jonny Bairstow added a quickfire 44 runs from just 26 balls, propelling Yorkshire to a daunting total of 610.
The Pears, who had shown resilience in their previous match against Somerset, faced an uphill battle to save the game.
They began their second innings cautiously, with openers Jake Libby and Gareth Roderick navigating the new ball effectively.
However, the breakthrough came in the 12th over when George Hill trapped Libby lbw.
Shortly after, Jordan Thompson dismissed Roderick, with Bess taking a spectacular catch at cover.
Worcestershire’s hopes of survival diminished further when Ethan Brookes was bowled by Adam Lyth just before tea, leaving Worcestershire at 72 for three and requiring over 500 runs.
The situation worsened after the break as wickets tumbled rapidly.
Adam Hose was bowled by Jack White, while Kashif Ali and Matthew Waite fell soon after, leaving the Pears reeling at 90 for 6.
Hill continued to dismantle the batting order, dismissing Pears skipper Brett D’Oliveira, who bravely batted despite an injury, and Ben Allison.
The final wicket fell with the score on 105, as Hill completed a four-wicket haul, sealing a comprehensive victory for Yorkshire.
Worcestershire’s second innings lasted just 34.1 overs, with their last eight wickets falling for a mere 33 runs.
Worcestershire will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Essex at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground in Chelmsford, which will start on Friday (April 18).
